Madison, WI –  Governor Evers has proposed a state budget that champions public education at every level, from Wisconsin’s PK-12 schools to technical colleges and the UW System.

“This budget inspires,” said AFT-Wisconsin President Kim Kohlhaas. “Governor Evers has spent the past several months and even years actively listening to what our communities want, in every district rural and urban, and it shows here. With true collective bargaining rights for front-line workers, and resources for students and educators from pre-kindergarten through

Madison, WI – AFT-Wisconsin President Kim Kohlhaas has responded to Governor Evers’ Emergency Order #3 as follows:

“In the midst of this pandemic, Republicans in our federal government have offered no relief to public schools. With Wisconsin leading the nation in new cases, our Republican state legislature has not considered a single bill to protect our state from the virus or its economic effects. Governor Evers' new Executive Order at least follows the science, but it does not go far enough.

Viral spread does not stop at our public schools'

Today Jim Johnsen withdrew his name as a candidate to be the next UW System President.

“We’re glad to see that Jim Johnsen has heeded the voices of union members around the state who have pushed back against this process, and this candidate. From the start, this search was fatally flawed by an unprecedented decision to exclude faculty, staff, and students from the committee,” said AFT-Wisconsin Vice President for Higher Education Jon Shelton, a professor of Democracy and Justice Studies at UW-Green Bay. “As many problems as we had with Johnsen as a

This week begins a series of campus listening sessions for UW System shared governance representatives on the topic of outgoing UW System President Ray Cross’s proposal to shrink the UW System, consolidating and eliminating programs and positions across campuses.

“On every campus across the state our members have been pushing back against this ill-advised attempt to use the pandemic as an excuse to cut back on students’ opportunities. We’re glad to see the Regents now involving shared governance representatives in the discussion,” said AFT-Wisconsin

Today UW System President Ray Cross is proposing a plan to shrink the UW System, consolidating and eliminating programs and positions across campuses.

“This plan responds to a human-made disaster, not a pandemic,” said AFT-Wisconsin Vice President for Higher Education Jon Shelton, a professor of Democracy and Justice Studies at UW-Green Bay. “Years of legislative attacks in the form of budget cuts, an unfunded tuition freeze, and depleted campus reserves have now provided Cross with an excuse to undermine the Wisconsin Idea, keeping the UW from

Madison, WI – AFT-Wisconsin supports Governor Evers’ extension of the Safer at Home Order through May 26.

“Throughout this pandemic, Governor Evers has provided steadfast leadership based on the science. The Safer at Home order has already saved lives, and this extension will help continuing to flatten the curve,” said AFT-Wisconsin President Kim Kohlhaas. “As a union of public employees including scientists and educators, we support this measure. Together we can keep our communities safe.”

Madison, WI – Governor Evers today proposed to use the state budget surplus to fund our schools.

AFT-Wisconsin President Kim Kohlhaas responded as follows:

“Electing a lifelong educator is precisely what our public schools needed. Since Governor Evers’s election, we’re finally seeing solutions that do what’s best for kids. Our public schools still receive less funding than they did a decade ago, and this proposal would go a long way to fix this. Committing to 2/3 funding for public schools, targeting aid to our rural schools and special education

Madison, WI – Vice President Mike Pence has come to Madison to celebrate National School Choice Week.

AFT-Wisconsin President Kim Kohlhaas responded to Pence’s visit as follows: “Vice President Pence has no business talking about education in Wisconsin, since the Trump administration has consistently attempted to cut billions in federal funding for education, while increasing funding for private and charter schools,” said Kohlhaas.

“In Wisconsin, we’ve seen the problems with ‘school choice’ close up,” said Dina Brennan, Co-President of the Chippewa
