The 2021 university scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Elsa Mowers, valedictorian at Esko High School with a 4.0 grade point average. She also attended classes at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Lake Superior College and the College of St. Scholastic for university credits. She received a scholarship to attend Conserve School, a semester school for environmental stewardship. In high school Elsa was in concert and jazz band, the varsity Math Team, Bio-club, National Honor Society, Biathlon Club and varsity captain of the soccer club. In addition she participated in the Duluth-Superior Symphony Youth Orchestra, UMD Tri-State Honor Band and Kids for the Boundary Waters. She has been employed as a full-time nanny for the last four summers and a soccer referee for the Arrowhead Youth Soccer Association. Elsa plans to attend Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington with a major in biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology with a minor in neuroscience. She would like to go to graduate school to earn a doctorate in naturopathic medicine, acupuncture and oriental medicine. Elsa's mother is a member of the Superior Federation of Teachers, Local 202.
